The first few weeks of college can sometimes be tough.
Adjusting to living in a dorm, having a roommate, having a lot of unstructured time can sometimes be difficult. The first few weeks may not be as exciting as you anticipated. You may find you actually miss your parents, siblings and certainly the family pet. Believe it or not, you are not alone. Here are some tips to help you get over the Homesickness Hump.
Tips to Help Cure the Homesick Blues
- Don't sit alone in your room. Take advantage of all that is going on the first few weeks. There are retreats, athletic events, concerts and organized outings into DC. Check CUA today or The Tower. Ask your RA about what is happening on campus.
- If you have a hobby or interest that you enjoyed at home, do it here. Find people in your dorm that might share the same interest whether it is going for a run, a pick-up game of basketball, photography or video games. Doing something fun helps you take your mind off of home and may introduce you to new friends.
- Stay in touch with home. Either calls or emails help to give a little lift. At first, if you are very homesick, emails might be easier. It is OK to miss the familiar things of home.
- Communicate with your roommate and hall mates. You are all in the same situation. You do not need to be best friends, but talk with each other and support each other. Go eat together in the Pryz or off-campus, hang out and watch a movie together. You may find that many of them are having the same feelings that you are having.
- Get involved with your classes. Speak to your professors and get to know classmates. Some classes may have older students in them who can help you navigate the first few weeks.
If none of this works and you are still feeling homesick, come in to speak with someone here at Student Health Services or someone at the Counseling Center (X5765). We are here to help you.
