- Drink cool fluids.
- Gargle with salt water.
- Take Tylenol or Advil to decrease the discomfort.
- Suck on lozenges.
The majority of sore throats are caused by viruses. If your sore throat is accompanied by a runny/stuffy nose, ear pressure and cough, it is more than likely caused by a virus. The treatment is to treat the symptoms with Tylenol or Advil, cough medicine and a decongestant. Classic symptoms of a strep throat include severe sore throat, fever, body aches and swollen glands.
